Members of our all-volunteer organization are active in areas such as beautification, education, land-use, and neighborhood safety. We regularly organize special projects such as the S Durham St. Billie Holiday Arts Project, neighborhood beautification and cleanups, and events.

Greening and Public Art – Encourages the installation of sidewalk planters, removes dead trees and tree stumps, increases the tree canopy, protects our street trees (by using corner fencing and parking bumpers), provides a one-day a week after school “Green Team” at Wolfe Street Academy, maintains a beautification station, and adds art and color to the neighborhood (such as painted barrel planters and troughs, tree bed mosaic medallions and painted storm drains).

Waste Reduction -  Hosts monthly cleanups of bulk trash, litter, leaf collection and weeds, and provides quarterly bulk waste dumpsters. Supports recycling and waste management outreach and education, community composting, and efforts to incorporate the “zero waste” ethos into community practices.

Community Garden

Events | News

The community garden was established in 1987 and is maintained by our gardeners. The garden provides habitat and food for many beneficial insects and birds, and also is used by the community as an activity center for various events. The mosaic walkway was created in 2012 by Cinder Hypki and the mural was painted in 2019 by Kerry Cesen.

Currently, there are no garden plots available. However, you can be added to the garden waitlist if you live within UFPIA’s boundaries, are at least 18 years of age, and are a member of UFPIA. To apply, contact Jan at communitygarden@upperfellspoint.org. (Note: It may take awhile, but you will be contacted when your name comes up.)

We also have a garden social membership for non-gardeners - more here.

Our Media committee keeps you up-to-date with the latest news in our neighborhood through our monthly newsletter, our website, and on social media (Facebook, UFPIA e-blast and Nextdoor).

Help is always needed with taking photographs of various events and writing for our newsletter or social media, or as an alternate to deliver newsletters when our regular carriers are not available.

In addition, if you would like to advertise with us, we provide ad space in various sizes and cost levels. If interested, contact Jan at newsletter@upperfellspoint.org

Neighborhood Safety

dan harrison

safety@upperfellspoint.org

Events | News

Members of the Safety Committee attend various safety/community area meetings to take the pulse of what the City is doing to curb, prevent, and resolve crime within our community. This information is then forwarded to the UFPIA members, and members can then decide what they can do as individuals to help or get involved. This committee can also provide information for City resources and direction for community residents if they are directly affected by crime. They also coordinate the annual National Night Out event.

Traffic & Parking

Events | News

The Traffic & Parking Committee is dedicated to promoting safe streets in our community for all users, beginning with the most vulnerable user, the pedestrians, up to vehicles. The Committee works on the implementation of Complete Streets, promoting multi-module transportation and mass transit advancements in the neighborhood, as well as Citywide. At the same time it strives to preserve parking for residents.
